Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.
In a broad sense, description, as explained by Kane (2000: 352), is defined like in the following sentence:
Description is about sensory experience—how something looks, sounds, tastes. Mostly it is about visual experience, but description also deals with other kinds of perception.
But in particular, the descriptive text is, “...... is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.”
So, it can be said that this descriptive text is a text that explains about whether a person or an object is like, whether its form, its properties, its amount and others. The purpose of the descriptive text is clear, that is to describe, represent or reveal a person or an object, either abstract or concrete.

When writing descriptive text, there are some generic structures for our writing to be true. The arrangement is:
1. Identification:
This section in the first paragraph - the goal is to identify something to be described or depicted. Explanation easy, Identification serves to introduce the reader about the object or something that we have described before we tell about its properties. The goal is not to get one of those readers.
(contains about the introduction of a person, place, animal or object will be described.)
2. Description:
This section in the second paragraph and so on - contains the properties inherent in something that you already introduced to the reader in the first paragraph.
contains a description of something such as animal, things, place or person by decribing its features, forms, colors, or anything related to what the writer describe.

– Specific participant : has a certain object, is not common and unique (only one). for example: Bandengan beach, my house, Borobudur temple, uncle Jim
– The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun, for example: a beautiful beach, a handsome man, the famous place in Jepara, etc.
– The use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple present because it tells the fact of the object described.
– Action verb: verbs that show an activity (for example, run, sleep, walk, cut etc.)

Example of Descriptive Text about Experience in Waterfall
Lembah Pelangi Waterfall
Lembah Pelangi Waterfall sounds unfamiliar for either local or foreign tourists. Lembah Pelangi Waterfall is located in Sukamaju village, Ulubelu sub district, Tanggamus district, Lampung province, Indonesia. The access to this place is quite difficult because Ulu Belu sub district is a remote area in Lampung with its hilly contours which make this tourist spot elusive.
Lembah Pelangi Waterfall has two levels where the waterfall on the second level has two branches. The height of the first level waterfall is about 100 meters, while the second level waterfall is about dozens
of meters. The best enchantment of this waterfall is the rainbow which appears between the valley and the waterfall as the name suggests. The soft flowing gurgling waterfall sounds is like a chant of nature which can remove the tiredness of the long trip to go there. Under the waterfall, there are several spots of warm water which can be an interesting spot for bathing.
In this place, you will be shown a panorama of natural beauty which is very interesting for every pair of eyes seeing it. Rocky hills accompanied by leafy trees will actually soothe both your eyes.
Pink Beach
Pink Beach or Pantai Merah Muda is one of the beaches in Komodo island, East Nusa Tenggara. The beach is called Pink Beach because
the sand beach is pink.
The pink color of its beach is a mixture of white sand beach colors mixed with crushed coral, shells, calcium carbonate from marine invertebrates that are very small, and also Foraminifera, microscopic amoeba that has a red body shell.
At Pink Beach, there are so many marine organisms. No fewer than 1,000 species of fish, 260 species of coral, and 70 species of sponge can be found here. Having so much marine life, this place is a proper spot for snorkeling and diving for sea sports lovers.

Descriptive text about “ Recreation places : Safari park ”
Safari Park
Safari Park, which is largely known as “Taman Safari” by local people, is a fairly unique zoo. It’s about 90 km from the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta and 2 km from Puncak. It is precisely located in Cisarua, Bogor, West Java.
This zoo is similar to a park which is located in Kenya, Africa. Even though it isn’t as large as Kenya Safari Park, just about 100 acres, but it still gives much enjoyment to the visitors. In most conventional zoos, the animals are put in cage, while Safari Park has the visitors in “cage”. They aren’t allowed to get off their vehicles because animals wander freely. Visitors who do not have car may make use of the exploring buses that has been provided by the park management.
The animals actually don’t wander freely to all over the zoo area, but they are just grouped into several different blocks. The first block is used for the wild carnivorous animals such as tigers and lions. The second block is used for big herbivorous animals such as elephants, rhinoceros, hippopotamuses, zebras, and giraffes. The third block is inhabited by primates like orang utans and gorillas. There are also many kinds of sheep and deer in it. There are bears, ostriches, and llamas in the last block. Each animal roams freely inside their own blocks.
The rest blocks are like in the conventional zoo that the animals are in cage, such as rare species of Indian white tigers, several kinds of monkeys, birds, and crocodiles. There are also some tame animals such as monkeys, bears, and baby tigers. The visitor can take pictures together with those animals.
This park also provides a playground. In this area, visitors are able to enjoy a circus show and buy some stuff from souvenir shop as memento. They are also able to enjoy wonderful small waterfall.
Safari Park is not only a recreational park but also a research park. The park has succeeded in conserving some species especially the rare ones, such as white tigers, giraffes, and hippopotamuses. It is one of the most valuable national assets.

Writing descriptive texts gives students
an opportunity to flex their creative
muscles. It challenges them to find new
and innovative ways to use language to
paint pictures in the minds of readers.
This can all be very daunting for some
students, especially those who find
writing difficult at the best of times.
The most effective way to encourage
reluctant students to unleash the power
of their imagination via the written word,
is to provide them with a clear structure
on which they can hang their words. The
steps outlined above will provide this
structure for your students.
But, as well as ensuring students have
ample practice opportunities to write, be
sure too that students have the
opportunity to read well-written
descriptive texts written by skilful writers,
whether in the form of poetry, essays, or
novels.
